IOSH Managing Safely Course

Suitable for

Managing Safely is designed for managers and supervisors in any sector, and any organisation. It is designed to bring managers up to date regarding the practical actions they need to take to handle health and safety in their teams.

Description

Managing Safely comprises seven core modules requiring a total direct input period of at least 24 hours plus assessment time. The delivery can be spread over a convenient time span. One organisational specific module may be added if required.

Method of Delivery

The course consists of a presentation, workshops, short case studies and a risk assessment project related to the workplace of the delegate.

The course is five days duration and can be delivered either at your site, if numbers allow, or at our training centre located in the West Midlands. Delegates are evaluated by means of a 45 minute written assessment paper consisting of 20 multi-choice questions.

At the end of the course a practical project is set to undertake a Risk Assessment. The delegate has a period of two weeks to return the project for marking. These marks are then included with the overall marking paper.

Recognition

On completion of the course an IOSH Managing Safely Certificate is awarded to all those who successfully complete the written and practical risk assessment.

• Explain the component parts of recognised safety management systems such as HSG65, BS8800 and OHSAS 18001
• Identify the data and techniques required to produce an adequate record of an incident and demonstrate the procedure for an accident investigation, recognising the human factors involved
• Prepare and use active monitoring checklists and implement schedules for active monitoring, recording results and analysing records

Learning Objectives

To be able to:

• Describe statutory requirements for reporting, and procedures for checking for non- reporting.
• Describe methods of epidemiological analysis for reactive monitoring of data to show basic trends.
• Define 'hazard' and 'risk' and describe the legal requirements for risk assessment.
• Demonstrate a practical understanding of a quantitative risk assessment technique and the data required for records.
• Describe workplace precaution hierarchies.
