Frequently Asked Questions

Who is this Course for?

This will depend on the level of award that you are wishing to achieve. Costs vary according to the qualification and for organisations, the number of candidates identified for assessment and training.

How is it delivered?

Under the scheme, facilities are listed under Risk headings for each type of facility - the qualification is achieved by demonstrating competence in each appropriate unit.

  • Low Risk – 4 units (e.g. Storage)

  • Medium Risk – 6 units (e.g. Transfer & Treatment Non-Hazardous, End of Life Vehicle, MRS, Composting, AD)

  • High Risk – 12 units (e.g. Hazardous, Clinical, Landfill, Incineration)

An approved QSP Assessor will be allocated to you following the registration process. They will offer all the support and guidance to assess you through the qualification. The qualification is work-based, the assessment is carried out "on the job" at your place of work.

You will be required to build a portfolio of evidence which will be assessed against the set CIWM (WAMITAB) standard; the evidence will be collected by carrying out normal day-to-day duties.

What happens if the registration expires?

You just re-register again and get another 2 years.

What is a RQF?

The RQF (Regulated Qualifications Framework) is a system in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland that classifies qualifications by level (Entry Level to Level 8) and size (time to complete), regulated by Ofqual. Replacing the QCF in 2015, it helps employers and learners understand the difficulty and scope of vocational and academic qualifications.

They are accessible to anyone who can do the identified job.

What do I need to do?

Answer underpinning knowledge questions and collect and personalise work-based evidence.

Will anyone help me?

You will be assigned an approved CIWM assessor who will conduct site visits and provide ongoing support and guidance throughout the process. Your QSPT allocated assessor will arrange visits directly with you and is also available via phone or email for any questions or advice.

Is there a test at the end?

No, it’s all about demonstrating competency which this is done through the assessment portfolio-based system. You will get COTC or CCC certificate which will satisfy the Environment Agency and give you competence to manage your waste facility.
